CONTRACTING: GRADING, BASE ROCK
INSTALLATION AND PAVING

What is Grading, Base Rock Installation and Paving?
In new areas of parking lots, industrial yards or roads a new construction must take place. In heavily failed areas the surface must be replaced and a new construction carried out. This construction process requires proper design and execution to ensure a strong and solid base is formed to carry the anticipated loads.

What is it used for?
In areas that have no pavement or a badly failed area a new construction may be required.

Are there different types?
New or reconstruction must be done with a clear design and intention. The types of materials to be used and the exact design must be carried out by a design engineer.

How is Grading Base Rock Installation and Paving done?
  1. The area is level led and top soil removed.
  2. For a reconstruction the existing surface is broken up and removed.
  3. The soil should have been checked for plasticity and CBR and may require stabilization.
  4. Drainage is added.
  5. The soil layer is compacted.
  6. A layer of base rock is applied with motor graders and or pavers to the design depth. It is wetted with a water cart to allow easier compaction.
  7. This layer is graded to level and compacted.
  8. More than one layer may be added and stabilizers such as lime or asphalt emulsion may be incorporated as stabilizers.
  9. A light application of emulsion may be applied to ensure even cure, especially if cement stabilization has been used.
  10. The surface is allowed to dry.
  11. A light prime of cutback asphalt may be applied.
  12. Final surfacing is then applied by paving or sealing.
