What is colored slurry surfacing?
Asphalt (bitumen) pavements are black, the reason for this is twofold,
firstly asphalt (bitumen) is a dark brown black color and most aggregates
are gray. This leads to a dark pavement. VSS have developed a way
out of this restriction. Macro®-Color TM
Is a mixture of an emulsion of a, close to clear, synthetic binder
and lighter colored aggregates. This produces a cold mix that can
be pigmented almost any color that is desired! This mixture may
be applied as a quick set slurry or microsurfacing to create a hard
wearing and attractive surface.
Synthetic bitumen was developed as a refinery product based on
a proprietary process developed in Europe. The binder is a hydrocarbon
macromolecular mixture that effectively has no asphaltenes and these
are the black coloring.
This resinous binder can be made into an emulsion that is a straw
color so it is perfect to pigment. VSS Emultech® technology
creates emulsions that perform to the high standards of ISSA requirements
for slurry surfacing design.
The mixtures are true slurry surfacing mixes and are suitable,
with correct design and aggregate selection, for most traffic situations.
The binder is flexible, durable and hard wearing and ages less than
conventional bitumens.
High quality pigments are added using a specially equipped slurry-surfacing
machine. This is a retrofit and may be carried out on almost any machine.
VSS contracting will apply this for you or the technology may be
transferred in some markets.
What is it used for?
Macro®-Color TM - Uses are only limited by the imagination of
the designer. Uses include.
- Lane delineation for traffic calming in busy streets
- Shoulder delineation
- Decorative Medians
- Pedestrian Paths
- Crosswalks for safety
- Driveways
- Golf Cart lanes
- Bike Paths
- Parks
The colors make the line-marking stand out.

Are there different types?
Usually Macro®-Color TM is applied as microsurfacing as per
the specification.
Macro®-Color TM is a true slurry surfacing with color.
Other colors maybe made available by special arrangement.
The aggregate gradings available currently are ISSA type I and
type II . This gives smooth or highly skid resistant surfaces.
How is Macro®-Color™ done?
Macro®-Color™ is applied as standard slurry surfacing. Details
may be found here
(slurry surfacing) and here
(microsurfacing).
Generally most jobs are small enough to carry out with the Minimac®
machine.
The Minimac has special modifications to allow pigment to be added
as dry or liquid, depending on the color.
Laying using MM | Finished Job |
Application is about one stone-1.5 stone thickness. This is about 4-10mm.
What does it do?
Macro®-Color™ is a true slurry surfacing and will provide
a waterproof and long lasting surface of high skid resistance. It
is not a crack treatment. Macro®-Color™ can be used over
hot mix, new or aged, chip seal, over AR chip seals in a Cape seal
or over PCC.
What does it cost?
Macro®-Color™ is a thin but it is a specialty product for
special applications. A VSS estimator will be pleased to measure your
job and give you an exact price.
