MACRO®-SURFACING |
What is Macro®-Surfacing? |
First
applied in 1988, Macro®-Surfacing is a specialized
open-graded cold mixed asphalt. It consists of a single-graded aggregate,
a polymer modified binder, fines and other additives. It is a hard
wearing surfacing for pavement preservation and rehabilitation. It
is similar to slurry surfacing in it's application but is specialized
for situations where noise reduction, drainage and reduced crack
reflectivity are desired.
|
| What is it used for? |
Macro®-Surfacing
can be used for pavement patching, surface profiling, and restoring
texture to some binder flushed pavements. It can be rolled with either
pneumatic or steel drum rollers after the "break" of the
emulsion and is designed with a high softening point binder emulsion
for heavy traffic loadings. |
Are there different types? |
|
Macro®-Surfacing
are all polymer modified Cationic quick-traffic, quick-cure.
They use emulsions designated as CQT-QC . Different stone sizes
give different surface textures. 1/8 by 10 Type A gradation is used
for parking lots and minor roadways. 1/4 by 6 Type B is a general
purpose gradation used for residential streets. 3/8 by 4 Type
C is used for applications such as arterial roads, highways and
freeways. Other special mixes, such as coarser gradations and gap-grades
are also available for pavement repair and re-profiling.
Different types of aggregate will give lighter or darker results.
The famous Table Mountain black rock will give your surfacing that
new look all through its life.
Macro®-Surfacingis polymer modified for longer
wear and better resistance to traffic and cracking. Crumb Rubber
modification within the asphalt binder prior to emulsification and
also post addition can be used to impart special properties for
severe application conditions and crack retardation. We at VSS are
experts in binders.
|
How Is Macro®-Surfacing made? |
Macro®-Surfacing
is mixed in a traveling paver truck. The exact proportions, determined
in a laboratory mix design, are mixed in a pugmill controlled by
the advanced electronics and hydraulics of the VSS Macropaver- the
machine we design and build ourselves.
It is laid through a specially designed spreader box. It is fast
and efficient as well as cost effective. This makes a smooth but
textured surface.
|
What does it do? |
Macro®-Surfacing
extends pavement life by protecting and preserving it from oxidation
and wear. This results in a pavement that is quieter, better to
drive on, look at and will require less maintenance in the future
thereby costing less in the long run.
|
What does it cost? |
| Generally Macro®-Surfacing is laid
thicker than slurry seal (2 stones compared to one) so is 40-60% more
expensive. A VSS estimator will be pleased to measure your job and
give you an exact price. |
