CONTRACTING: SLURRY SURFACING APPLICATION FOR RESTORING STREETS AFTER TRENCHING

It happens all the time, a perfectly good road surface is trenched. It might be a month, it might be a year but the road has lots of life left and it is cut up. The result is usually like that in pictures 1. A long term scar that runs along the street. This is uneven and ugly.

Picture 2: Poorly filled and post compacted trench
Often the hot mix or cold mix back fill is inexpertly done and it continues to compact so that it forms a bump. ugly and a poor ride is created. (Picture 2).

And sometimes the trench allows water to get inside creating fatigue cracking and other failures.( picture 3 and 4).

Valley Slurry Seal Company (VSS) has working with selected cities, developed a way of giving the city back the good TOTAL road surface that was there before trenching.

The cities require the contractor responsible for the trenching to allow in the price for a new type of slurry treatment that ensures that the aesthetics and a and functionality of the street is totally restored.

The trenching is first carried out as shown in pictures 5 and 6.

Picture 7: Step I of filled trench
The trench is filled as normal with hot mix and compacted with a small roller or plate compactor and traffic allowed to post compact it. After this step is looks like picture 7. (Note for shallower trenches to bout 1 foot (30cm) the full trench may be filled with this slurry).

VSS then finishes the job with a slurry using the Macropaver® or Minimac machines.(pictures 8 and 9).

The mix used in this operation is a specially developed and economic mix that is designed to seal- resisting water ingress into the patch, make a flexible skid resistant surface and, make the road look better. As a final treatment slurry may be applied over the full road width - creating a smooth and attractive streetscape. The hard wearing polymer modified mixture adds durability and excellent wear characteristics to the surface.

This method has now been used extensively and pictures 10, 11 and 12 show successful streets.

Done correctly the treatment will last 6-8 years, or until the next time the cable company develops a new system.
