Guidelines for Specifying Slurry Surfacing
Slurry Surfacing is a hard wearing road surfacing. But how do you ensure that
you are getting the right product. This web site has many presentations
and a lot of technical information on this subject. Please refer to
the technical library
and the contracting
sections. This is a summary to quickly assist in choice.
The specifications are listed in this section for slurry surfacings of several types.
Slurry or Microsurfacing?:
Microsurfacing is used where thicker overlays are needed. Or where
low temperatures and very fast set up time to take traffic soon after
laying is required (for example, freeways and very high traffic).
It may also be used on high volume airports. It may also be used for
rut filling. If this is your type of job go to the microsurfacing
specification. Refer to the aggregate
size selector chart.
Slurry Surfacing is a suitable solution for most arterial roads, residential streets and other paved areas such as ramps, bridges, airports, and parking lots .
Polymers or Standard?
Polymers give 30% longer life and better stone retention and resistance
to bleeding. If you don't require these benefits go to the standard
slurry specification. Refer to the aggregate
size selector chart.
If you do go to the polymer modified slurry specification. Choose
black rock
for longer wear and a permanently black- new looking surface. If not
go to the non
black rock specs. (Refer to the aggregate
size selector chart.

Rut Filling
Ruts will vary in depth and width. Filling must be done on tonnage and not an area basis.
| Depth of rut (in) | Depth of rut (mm) | Application (lb/yd2) | Application (kg/m2) |
| 0.5-0.75 | 12.7-19.1 | 20-30 | 10.9-16.3 |
| 0.75-1.00 | 19.1-25.4 | 25-35 | 13.6-19.1 |
| 1-1.25 | 25.4-31.75 | 28-38 | 15.2-20.7 |
| 1.25-1.5 | 31.75-38.1 | 32-40 | 17.4-21.8 |
The specifications may be used as included in this section. In Rut filling the pavement must not be plastic. Plastic pavement will continue to deform after the rut fill is applied.
