Technologies - New and Improved
Rejuvenation Seals/Scrub Seals
  • Preventive Maintenance (Proactive)
  • Corrective Maintenance (Reactive)

Rejuvenation Seal - Styraflex™ ERA
  • An Emulsion that contains polymer, rejuvenating oil and bitumen
  • Sprayed onto cracked surfaces and choked with sand or cinders
  • Penetrates and softens hardened bitumen
  • Can be used in cold conditions

Scrub Seals
  • Binder is sprayed and scrubbed into the pavement with a broom or squeegee
  • Either hot asphalt Rubber binder or emulsion rejuvenating binder may be used
  • The surface is spread with sand, cinders or aggregate and rolled

Slurry Surfacing
  • Slurry Seal
  • Microsurfacing
  • Colored Slurry

What is Slurry Surfacing?
  • Slurry surfacing is a mixture of graded aggregates, a polymer modified emulsion and additives
  • It is applied using a special paver mounted on a truck or self propelled
Components are metered into a pugmill, mixed and spread on the surface
  • Slurry is 1-1.5 stone thick and is used as a surface, Microsurfacing is high stability so may be spread in multi-layers and provides a hard wearing surface or rut filler.
  • Slurry seal cures to traffic in 1-3 hrs, Microsurfacing break and cure to traffic ability in 15-45 minutes

Common Errors
  • Poor Surface Preparation
  • Poor materials selection
  • Incomplete design
  • Failing to design for climate
  • Poor application technique and materials handling

Slurry Seal
  • Seals minor cracks
  • Seals sound but oxidized pavements
  • Restores surface texture and skid resistance
  • Corrects raveling
  • Reduces noise
  • Allows overlays where weight restrictions apply
  • Improves ride and profile

What does Microsurfacing do?
  • Restores surface profile
  • Fills ruts
  • Can be applied at night
  • Suitable for low or very high traffic
  • Suitable for all temperature ranges

  • USA Govt/ISSA study on new methods for greater predictability of performance
  • 4 year study
  • Principal Investigators : Jim Moulthrup, Glynn Holleran
  • Using all International sources and climates

Application

Using in Poor Conditions
  • Special mixes
  • Rolling
  • Used for poor weather to promote coalescence and strength
  • Used in Airports
  • Gives an even surface
  • Seals poor aggregates

Blending

Asphalt Rubber Blending Schematic

Asphalt Rubber Morphology : 22% Crumb Rubber (Magnification X 125)

No Extender oil 200C 1 hr

Extender Oil 3%

Asphalt Rubber can be used in:
  • Crack Sealers
  • Special Patching materials
  • Chip Seals as SAM and SAMI
  • Hot Mix overlays up to 50% thinner than conventional BUT also solving cracking especially as Gap and open graded mixes
  • On PCC or Asphalt

Asphalt Rubber Chip Seals
  • Application rate 1.5-1.8 times conventional binder
  • Highly Durable
  • Bridge cracks
  • Life times 15 years and higher

Crack Relief Seal 5 years

Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix
  • Highly flexible
  • Can be applied at 50% of the thickness of conventional hot mix
  • Will bridge cracks
  • Can be GG and OG for for drainage and flexibility

Fracture Temperature

Asphalt Rubber

Mix Design and Construction
  • Higher mix temperature
  • 20% - 40% higher binder content
  • Higher compaction temperature
  • No Rubber Tired finish rolling
  • Sand Spread

Multi Layer Systems Using Seals: Cape Seals/HMA
  • Even but cracked pavements
  • AR chip Seal with overlay of slurry surfacing or HMA
  • Called Asphalt Rubber Cape Seals or 2 layer systems
  • Life 8 years plus

Above snow line

High Desert/Snow area

Asphalt Rubber Three Layer Systems
  • For extreme cracking cases with uneven surfaces
  • Lifetimes 10 years and upwards

Three Layer System

Scrub Seals
  • AR is used in Scrub seals
  • For a long lasting crack relief

AR V Polymer
  • Higher Rubber % equals better fatigue and crack resistance
  • Rubber is cheaper
  • Blend on site preferred for AR
  • Higher Viscosity = higher durability and higher binder application.

High Performance Chip Seal Emulsions
  • High Bitumen Content
  • Can be Polymer Modified
  • VSS HBCE® emulsions are high performance they cure faster and adhere to almost all stone types
  • Works to 4C pavement
  • Improved stone retention

Recycling With Foam or Emulsion Mixes
  • Renewal of base by full depth reclamation with emulsion or foamed bitumen
  • Increases Load Bearing in Base
  • Reuses the bitumen and aggregate
  • Slurry Surfacing, chip seal or HMA seals and protects the surface
  • Lasts 7-8 years between applications. Base should last 20 years plus

Stresspave Cold Mix®
  • Low Emissions Of Hydrocarbons and Dust
  • Energy Saving
  • Lower Cost Mix Plants
  • Easier Transport and Storage
  • No Aging In manufacture
  • Can use polymers and and hydraulic binders
